- Paul Baumer:
is the narrarator and protagonist of the novel, of which Remarque use to potray the horrors of war. In the beginning of the novel, Paul Baumer starts of as a sensitive and compassionate man, who was eagered to experience life. For example, he loved poetry. He played the piano. However, as he ignorantly enters the world of warfare, Paul D undergoes traumatic experiences which affected his perception of himself, life and death. Through out the novel, Paul has flashbacks which constrasts his life before war, during and afer the war. Due to traumatic experiences, he becomes a "human animal" and detached himself from "feeling".
- The Nurse: young and pretty, helped Albert Kropp with his injured leg.
- French Girls: three French girls, after having promised food by Paul and his friends, welcomed their late night visit. Paul clings to a small brunette, while he tries to fill in the gaps of his loneliness.
- Katczinsky: commonly refered to "Kat" in the novel, he was the oldest (40 years old) and the leader of the group of soldiers http://www.bwdd.com/allquiet/characters.htm#Katczinsky. Serving as a fatherly figure, he is claimed to have a six sense. He is aware of when a bombardment is going to occur, and cann be depended on for looking for food.
- Albert Kropp: Paul's bestfriend who gets a leg injury and is sent to the same hospital as Paul is.
- Muller: described as having a protruding teeth and a booming laugh, Muller is intellectual and dreams about taking examination. However, towards the end of the war, he dies in great pain for which he was shot in the stomach.
- Tjaden: the locksmith who eats all the time. He loathes Himmelstoss and decides to plot revenge against him.
- Kantorek: the patriotic schoolteacher who instructs Paul and his classmates to sign up for the military. He refers to the soldiers as "iron youth". Remarques uses him to satirize the ideals of patriotism and nationalism.
- Himmelstoss: was a mailman, but became a strict displinary in the military service. He likes having power over people and dislikes Paul and his classmates because they are disobedient, which makes it difficult for him. Moreover, they hate him as well because we was training them too difficult However, on their last day of training, they ambush him and beat him up when he was sleeping.
- Kemmerich: Another one of Pauls friends and is second to die in the beggning of the novel. Kemmerich dies when he suffers an injury from a light bullet wound, and gets ganggrene. even thought his legs are amputated.
- Joseph Behm: The first of Pauls friends who died in the war. Ironically, he was one of the men who wished not to enlist, but was pressured into enlisting in the army by his school teacher Kantorek. After his death, his friends loose their trust in the 'authorities' that convinced them to go to war.
- Detering: a peasant farmer who is fond of horses and claims that they shouldn't be used in war. He doesn't talk much, though he misses his farm and wife immensely. However, on the front line his desire to return home was so strong, he decided to desert the army, where he was caught and court-martialed.
- Duval: a French man, Paul encountered in the shell hole and killed. When Paul was going to murder him, he refused to identify him by name, but by a "printer by trade". Though, Paul undergoes a dilemmic sitituation to whether or not to kill Duval, he ends up doing so because that was what he was sent to do. It wasn't until the end when Paul found out that he had a wife and daughter.
- Leer: has a full beard which makes him look older than he really is. Furthermore, he has a prior experiences with women and makes a big impression on the blonde French girl. In the end of the novel, he suffers from a fatal wound in the hip.
- Haie Westhus: Paul's circle of friends in the Second Army. He was a peat-digger and scorned being in the army. Nonetheless, he says he would reenlist in the army after the war if he had the opportunity. However, he never got that oppurtunity because he was killed in battle.
- Lewandowski: a Polish soldier who suffered a serious abnominal wound, and was the oldest patient at the hospital. He longed to see his wife and his baby who was born during his two-year absence at war. When his wife Marja arrives, Johann Lewandowski makes love to her while two other soldiers watch out for intruders and Albert Kropp takes care of the baby.
